86 Malibu Skier getting more water in the bilge than it should. Getting very frustrated since I can't find where the water is coming in at. Will take on water while docked so not just when under way...have looked at every thing but can't see exhaust outlets. Any suggestions from experience would be helpfull. It's not the drive shaft packing.

Take a mirror and a flshlight and look under your deck in the bilge area. look at your exhaust hoses, look at your rudder stuffing box. I can not think of any other area that would leak water sitting at the dock with the engine NOT running. Unless there is a pinhole in the bottom of the boat somewheres. how much water do you get while docking overnight? with stock stuffing boxes there will always be water in the bilge. thats just the way inboards are with the stock old set up. |

I'm a month or so behind this thread, but for what it's worth, I had to replace the exhaust hoses on my 85 to keep my bildge dry. Good chance you have the same issues.

My '86 Malibu Skiier was leaking (significantly) through the swim-step mount bracket bolts.
Tough to diagnose, because you really can't see them without pulling the gas tank, but i could see water coming from the far corners of the transom into the bilge.
Took 'em off and saw cracking through the gel coat, and some rot in the transom. I spent some time cleaning the rot out and rebuilding the mount sections, then drilled new holes through the repair for the mounting brackets. When i put it all back together i made sure to use a backer board (treated) inside the hull, and goobered up the bolts and holes with Sikaflex (or could use a 3M Marine caulking).
It made a world of difference.

I had an 87 Sypra that used plastic exaust fittings that went through the transom. The hose clamp used to tighten the exaust hose to them was over tightened, causing one to distort and leak. Replaced with brass.
